Moshpit Studios emerged as a collaborative venture between Grammy Award-Winning producer Darryl Swann and VR enthusiast Ans Shabbir, signaling a paradigm shift in music discovery through virtual reality. 'Moshpit', a music-based video game, was conceived by Swann in the late 90s as the game-console market ramped up, and was in talks with many game developers including Sam Houser of Rock Star Games.

“For two decades, we’ve seen a steady decline of an antiquated music industry business-model, and we are motivated to contribute in growing the model by developing a compelling and innovative opportunity for artists to get discovered by, and connect with fans through the Moshpit platform” said Swann. “As technology has evolved since the late 1990’s, Moshpit has turned into something much bigger than my original vision of a simple RPG music game. It’s now an action-adventure music-discovery platform wrapped up in an entertaining VR experience.”

Now, Moshpit has matured into a grand concert-gaming platform, blending action-adventure elements with music exploration. Motion capture plays a crucial role in the animation pipeline for characters, whether in movies or games. Typically, producers invest significant amounts in cutting-edge technology for optimal results, ranging from high-tech suits to intricate setups involving numerous cameras. However, these solutions come with a hefty price tag, making them accessible only to large studios, leaving others with limited options.


Previously, we relied on such solutions for capturing artist performances. However, the studio has now endeavored to replicate these results using simpler methods. The primary aim of Moshpit's creator studio is to democratize access, enabling any artist to capture performances from their own space using everyday devices like mobile phones or laptop cameras. To achieve this, the studio has simplified the MoCap process leveraging common hardware for optimal results.

Key to this approach is the integration of Move.AI, a markerless animation capturing AI tool. It allows the generation of 3D animation data from 2D video output, employing artificial intelligence to translate human motion realistically into lifelike animations. Additionally, the Unreal Engine's MetaHuman creator facilitates the application of these animations to realistic avatars within the Metaverse, seamlessly integrating to provide an immersive experience that blurs the lines between reality and virtuality.

We recently showcased the effectiveness of this solution in a DJ performer-based show featuring 3D avatars, made possible through our mocap stage. This serves as a testament to what can be achieved, with future plans for moshpit concerts featuring 3D avatar-based performers and mocap.

Smart and dynamic non-player characters (NPCs) form the foundation of immersive experiences featuring numerous characters. Among Moshpit's pioneering advancements is the introduction of a large crowd of intelligent fans, powered by Artificial Intelligence (AI), who engage with human avatars and react to the music. Moshpit demonstrated its AI-driven audience in Sean the Star Emperor's virtual 

, staged within a daytime virtual festival venue.

“This virtual/VR world is so cutting edge, who wouldn’t want to break new earth with such an endeavor. This is the future. Society, culture, technology, and social habits are forcing us even more toward this realm. If I find the right platform to invest in, accompanied by a new technology, then I have hope. This is the beauty of Moshpit”, says featured artist Sean.

“Believable crowds have been lacking in most other virtual concerts released thus far. There are many aspects that may be considered in creating a great virtual crowd, but we believe two factors are important in making a concert crowd seem real, which are density and AI. The standard pipeline for real-time characters would not support the densely packed crowd with the huge character-count we needed for Moshpit, so we developed a new character rendering pipeline from the ground-up to accommodate our vision, but with that came the problem of AI. Having a huge character count is useless if all the characters are behaving exactly the same way, or not reacting appropriately to what’s happening on-stage” says CTO Ans Shabbir.

Moshpit developers worked deeply on density and AI to the point where the character count is huge while maintaining each individual AI crowd-member’s unique personality traits. The underlying AI algorithm processes numerous parameters in deciding which character should do what at every given moment.

“In addition to the stunning crowd, we wanted to represent the feel of a festival, and that starts with a venue with a true festival setting. We created a Coachella inspired venue. In many virtual concerts, there are all types of venues set in fantasy worlds, in space, etc. We believe venues should be relatable first, like ones we’ve experienced first hand. Replicating this relatable “feel” is what we believe is necessary first, so we created this venue with the intention of it looking and feeling like a living, breathing environment rather than some fantasy environment.” says Darryl Swann.

Building upon the foundation of Moshpit's previous successes, this collaboration brought forth a plethora of advancements designed to immerse audiences like never before. One of the most notable upgrades was the expansion of the AI crowd, showcasing greater diversity and individuality among virtual concert-goers. Each character boasted unique personality traits, enhancing the realism and dynamism of the virtual environment.

Furthermore, the venue itself underwent a stunning transformation, with new installations such as Spire, Cacti and Dreamscape, inspired by the legendary Coachella festival. When Covid hit in early 2020, many record companies, booking agents and artists who were thriving via live-concerts were quickly forced to adopt new ways to expose their artists due to the shutdown. The term “Virtual Concert” rapidly became a generic term to mean an artist performing with the audience in a different location, E.g. Live-streaming, or heavily-curated super-star-only music-experiences such as in Fortnite, Roblox, Sony, etc.

Amidst these unprecedented challenges, Moshpit embarked on its unique journey, teaming up with NKRiot to unveil its groundbreaking virtual 

“What I saw in Moshpit was a way to help push the creative node of one’s self, and knew deep inside that there’s a place for everyone to be equal, respected and acknowledged for their talent. A stage of unlimited opportunity to finally play in front of millions of cheering fans around the world” – NKRIOT.

The team at Moshpit has been marinating deeply and developing what they feel a virtual concert should look and feel like. “We wanted our virtual concerts to feel like a ‘concert’ rather than a music video. From Interactive crowd to lighting and pyro, it needed to have a grand-concert feel to it.

Although real time rendering technology has existed for more than 2 decades, it has not been pushed far enough for the purpose we wanted to use it for, so we manipulated it to fulfill our objectives. Audio also plays a significant part in Moshpit. Creating the complex reverberations and reflections of a loud concert are key to an immersive experience. “Historically speaking, audio has been treated as sort of an afterthought as the visual aspects of media have always been well-served. The irony though is that audio can exist without video, but video without audio, or with poor audio can be very offsetting”, says Swann.
